Exploring the Modern Diet

Following The Evolution of Food  the modern diet enables us to plan / prepare food in advance, which is actually necessary for making life easier and making healthy living more viable.

Choose a healthy diet

To choose a healthy diet, we should first understand what makes a healthy diet. I have previously created some posts on SuperFoods which we should include as a part of our nutritional content. Most products nowadays contain nutritional value such as calories, sugar etc, but this might not necessarily mean that if they are low in calories they are health.

This might seem complicated but really all we have to do is read the ingredient list, if there is anything on it that you don’t know what it is or cannot pronounce it, you shouldn’t purchase it or at least, do not consume it on a regular basis.

Modern Lifestyle

Our hectic and fast modern lifestyles might not enable us to eat the way we like, due to lack of time and the lack of possibility of having a fixed schedule with enough time to cook or prepare foods. What I found to be helpful is try out a couple of recipes and master them which makes preparing much more easier. Meal planning and prepping is essential! I try to try out one or two new recipes a week, I plan my meals Mondays or Tuesdays of the week before, do my food shopping between Wednesdays and Fridays and on Saturdays. I try to batch cook certain recipes and freeze as well such as curries and chilli’s to have on hand when I have no time to cook. I love using my slow cooker for this as it makes it so much easier.

Food Effects

What we eat effects how we feel such as eating  fatty foods make us feel tired and heavy, while eating spicy food warm and energize our body. We can also clean out body through the way we eat, such as honey, which is a great cleanser that can be added to beverages and desserts. Changing our diet may also change our lifestyle

Preserved Food 

Fresh food is the best food to eat, but modern lifestyle make it very difficult to avoid preserved foods completely.  Foods can be preserved in various ways, traditional methods includes; salting, pickling, drying, bottling and preserving in sugar. Modern methods include; pasteurization, ultra heat treatment, deep freezing, canning, irradiation, puffing and chemical tretments in the form of additives. When choosing preserved food try and choose frozen, bottled or canned according to the traditional methods to avoid eating artificial preservatives.

    Thank you for your comment Joyce, glad you liked the tips πŸ™‚ I have been trying to eat healthy for around 10 years now, but sometimes temptation gets the best of me πŸ™ I do however try to eat healthy 80% of the time! xx
