Following the introductory post HERE, in this post I will share some simple tips to help with detox!
What are toxins?
Toxins, including pesticides and herbicides, hormones and preservatives, enter the body as chemicals sprayed onto or added to foods. Overloading your body with too much of one type of food can also be toxic to the body. A multitude of poisonous chemicals found in cigarettes and alcohol, and caffeine also takes a toll on the body
Effects of Toxins
A build up of toxins can make us feel mentally and physically low and leave us susceptible to infections such as colds. Symptoms include digestive complaints, difficulty concentrating and dull skin.
When you have to eliminate a large amount of toxins from your body, this inevitably has detrimental effect on the efficient functioning of the organs, especially the liver and the immune system.
The liver is the major organ of detoxification, breaking down harmful chemicals into forms that can be excreted. A detox diet can help relieve your organs of the burden of toxins, enabling them to function more efficiently.
Water is essential in helping your body to eliminate toxins, and aids effective functioning of all organs
It makes sense to limit the amount of toxins that you are exposed to – remember that Prevention Is Better Than Cure! A few simple changes to your lifestyle can make a significant difference:
- Try to eat organic food wherever possible
- Wash all fresh food thoroughly before use
- Use natural, organic beauty, personal care and household products
- Stop smoking: avoid inhaling passive smoke
- Avoid drugs; including aspirin, paracetamol and the contraceptive pill
- Reduce or eliminate alcohol consumption
Foods to aid Detox
In order for the body to get rid of toxins in the form of water-soluble waste (as urine or faeces), it is important to follow a healthy ‘whole food’ diet.
Whole foods contain important substances such as vitamins, minerals and enzymes needed for the body’s natural cleansing processes to function properly
A balanced whole food die should be rich in fresh fruits and vegetable, high quality proteins such as lean meat and fish, some pro-biotic foods and pulses and whole grains.
Brown rice is a particularly good wholegrain. It acts like a ‘pipe cleaner’, gathering toxins as it passes through the digestive system and expelling them as waste. Drinking plenty of water (aim for 2 litres) everyday helps flush out toxins and keep the body hydrated and working efficiently.
