Superfoods: Cranberries

A little bit of History:

This bright red cousin of the blueberry grows on shrubs and was first enjoyed by the indigenous people of America, cooked and sweetened with honey or maple syrup. By the 18th century, cranberries were being exported to England, but they are primarily grown in the USA.

Benefits:

Cranberries are renowned for their medicinal properties in preventing and treating urinary tract infections, and more recent research reveals that this berry may also boost gastrointestinal and oral health, lower LDL cholesterol, prevent kidney stones and protect against cancer. The early Americans also used cranberries as a poultice for wounds.

Tips:

  •  Pick your cranberries between October and December when they are at their freshest
  • Sprinkle dried cranberries over cereal or hot oatmeal to create a delicious breakfast
  • Mix dried cranberries with nuts for a tasty and energy giving snack
  • Sprinkle cranberries on salads for a sweet kick
